Comparison Cluster Repair vs Replacement

Cluster repair vs replacement. Which is right?

When your dash starts misbehaving — pixel failure, dancing needles, dead displays — the dealer's default answer is "fit a new cluster." It's almost never the cheapest answer, and rarely the right one. Here's a proper comparison.

The two options,
side by side.

Option A

Cluster Repair

Specialist repair of the existing cluster — replacing failed components (LCD, stepper motors, backlight, ribbon cables) at component level. Cluster keeps its original mileage and history.

Option B

Cluster Replacement

Fit a new or refurbished cluster, programme/code it to your vehicle, correct mileage to match. Original cluster scrapped.

Feature
Cluster Repair
Cluster Replacement
What's actually swapped
Failed component(s) only — LCD panel, stepper motor, backlight, ribbon cable.
Entire cluster unit.
Mileage handling
Original mileage preserved — no correction needed.
New cluster's mileage needs correcting to match your real figure.
Cluster history retained
Yes — original cluster with original VIN-link and service history.
No — replacement cluster effectively starts fresh.
Time on driveway
Typically 90-120 minutes.
2-3 hours depending on coding requirements.
Cost
Significantly less than replacement.
Higher — new cluster plus programming/coding labour, at considerable cost.
Where the work happens
On the driveway in most cases.
On the driveway possible, but more complex.
Warranty
12 months on the repair from the specialist.
12 months on the replacement cluster.
Best for
Pixel faults, stepper motor faults, backlight, dead clusters that can be revived. Most cluster faults.
Severe water damage, impact damage, or cases where repair isn't economical.

When Cluster Repair
is the right choice.

Cluster Repair comes out ahead in these scenarios — straight talk about when this is the answer.

Pixel / LCD faults

Almost universally repairable. Ribbon cable refurbishment or LCD panel swap. Repair is dramatically cheaper than replacement.

Stepper motor / needle faults

Failed steppers are replaced with fresh ones at component level. Cluster keeps original mileage and history.

Backlight failures

Bulb or LED replacement — straightforward repair, no need to replace the cluster.

When mileage history matters

For private resale or HPI-clean documentation, preserving the original cluster keeps the chain intact. Replacement breaks that chain.

When Cluster Replacement
is the right choice.

Cluster Replacement comes out ahead in these scenarios — honest about where it has the edge.

Severe water damage

Cluster fully submerged or extensive corrosion — repair isn't economical. Replacement is the cleaner answer.

Impact damage to the cluster

Crash damage that's broken the cluster housing or PCB. Some can be repaired; severe cases are replace-only.

Multiple compound faults

A cluster with five distinct faults isn't economical to repair item-by-item. Sometimes replacement is the rational choice.

Unobtainable repair parts

For some rare or obscure clusters, replacement components may be unavailable. Used cluster adaptation is the only option.

In our experience, 80-90% of cluster faults can be repaired economically. The dealer's default of "fit a new cluster" is usually a function of dealer workshops not doing component-level repair, not a function of repair being technically wrong. We do the repair on your driveway and your original cluster goes back in.

Common questions.

How long does cluster repair last?
Pixel and stepper-motor repairs are typically permanent — failed components replaced with fresh equivalents. A cluster repaired today should still be running 10+ years from now. 12-month warranty included.
Does cluster repair affect my mileage?
No — the mileage stays in the cluster and isn't altered during repair. If you do need to replace the cluster (rare), we can correct the new cluster's mileage to match your real figure.
Can the dealer tell if my cluster has been repaired?
Generally no — a properly-repaired cluster is electrically and functionally identical to an unrepaired one. The repair work is internal; there's nothing visible from the outside. Mileage, VIN-link, history all preserved.
What faults can't be repaired?
Severe water damage with widespread board corrosion. Impact damage that's broken the PCB. Multiple compound faults where the repair would cost more than replacement. We diagnose first and recommend honestly.
Is cluster repair done on the driveway or workshop?
On the driveway for the vast majority of jobs. We have the tooling, components and workspace in the van. Cluster comes out, gets repaired, goes back in, all in one visit. Typical job 90-120 minutes.
Will a cluster repair pass MOT?
Yes — a properly-repaired cluster functions identically to an unrepaired one. MOT looks at function (does the speedo work, does mileage display, etc.), not whether the cluster has had internal repair.
