What is cluster repair?

Cluster repair is the diagnosis and fix of faults in a vehicle's instrument cluster — the dashboard panel that shows your speed, mileage, fuel level, warning lights and dozens of other readouts. When digital displays go dim, pixels die, needles get stuck, displays freeze, or modules drop off the CAN bus, that's cluster repair territory.

Pixel failure on LCD display

Lines of pixels go missing on the central display, making numbers unreadable. Classic on early Mercedes W203/W211, BMW E39/E46/E60, and a host of other 2000s-era clusters. We replace the LCD ribbon cable and pixel array — the rest of the cluster keeps working as normal.

Dim or flickering backlight

Failed LEDs behind the cluster face plate cause dim, flickering or dark patches. We replace the LED strips with high-quality matched units, restoring even illumination across the whole dial set.

Stuck or jumping needles

Speed, RPM, fuel or temperature needles that stick, jump or read wildly. Usually caused by failed stepper motors on the gauge needle assemblies. Common on most modern clusters — we swap the failed stepper motors and recalibrate the needles to read zero correctly.

Frozen or rebooting cluster

The cluster locks up, restarts, or shows default values that won't change. Often a failed capacitor on the cluster main board, sometimes corrupted firmware. We diagnose, repair, and reload firmware where needed.

Mileage reading wrong / 999999 / dashes

Stored mileage becomes corrupted — showing default values, all 9s, or just dashes. We restore the true mileage from the ECU or gateway and verify every module agrees. See our mileage correction page for the full process.

Cluster won't communicate

Diagnostic tools can't talk to the cluster, or the cluster has dropped off the CAN bus. Usually a failed cluster microcontroller or coding issue. We can diagnose at the OBD port and decide whether component-level repair or a replacement cluster is the right route.

How cluster repair actually works.

Cluster repair isn't a generic "plug it in and read codes" job — it's electronics work. We need to identify exactly what's failed, source the correct replacement parts, and rebuild the cluster without disturbing the data that's stored on it (mileage, VIN, immobiliser pairing).

Diagnose at the car

We start at the OBD port — read fault codes, check CAN bus communication, test cluster outputs. Many cluster faults can be diagnosed without removing anything.

Identify the fault component

If repair is the right route, we pull the cluster out and inspect. Most common faults are well-known on specific cluster part numbers — we know what fails on each and can usually pinpoint it quickly.

Step 03

Repair on the bench

Failed LCDs, stepper motors, capacitors or LED strips are replaced at component level. We keep stocks of common parts on the van so most repairs happen the same day.

Step 04

Refit, verify, sync mileage

Repaired cluster goes back in. We re-pair with the immobiliser if needed, restore the correct mileage from the ECU, clear fault codes, and verify everything reads correctly before we leave.

How much does cluster repair cost?
Cost depends on the fault and the vehicle. Common faults (pixel failure, stepper motors, LED strips) are typically a fraction of the cost of a replacement cluster. We give a fixed quote up front once we've identified the fault — no surprises on the day.
Will my mileage be lost during cluster repair?
No. We don't disturb the stored mileage during component-level repair. If the cluster is so badly damaged that the data can't be read, we restore the correct mileage from the ECU after the repair — so the figure on the dash matches the rest of the car.
Do you repair clusters from older cars (pre-2000)?
Often yes, depending on the make and model. Older mechanical-electronic hybrid clusters are sometimes repairable, sometimes not. Send make, model and year and we'll be honest about whether it's economical to repair.
Can you fix a cluster from a crash-damaged car?
Often yes. Physical damage to the cluster face or housing is usually repairable; severe water or fire damage is sometimes beyond economical repair. We'll inspect and quote before committing.
Do you guarantee the repair?
Yes — every cluster repair comes with a 12-month guarantee against the same fault recurring. If anything goes wrong inside that period with the parts we replaced, we revisit at no charge.
Can you do the repair while I wait?
Many repairs yes, particularly common pixel and backlight jobs that take 60-90 minutes. Stepper motor replacements and capacitor work can take a bit longer. We'll let you know expected timing when you book.
What if you can't repair the cluster?
If component repair isn't viable, we'll quote you on a replacement-cluster route instead — sourcing a used cluster and syncing the mileage from your original. That route is documented on our replacement-cluster page.
