BMS locked after a
crash or fault?

When a Mercedes hybrid or EV detects an impact, severe undervoltage, or a fault during charging, the battery management system locks the high-voltage battery as a safety measure. The car will not start, charge, or drive until the BMS is unlocked and reset. We safely perform this reset via OBD using manufacturer-level software.

Even a relatively minor impact can trigger the BMS crash sensors. Once tripped, the high-voltage battery isolates itself and the car cannot start or drive. We reset the lockout via OBD after a full systems check, returning the vehicle to drivable condition.

    With insulated gloves, HV-rated tools and the correct working setup, we run the OBD unlock procedure using manufacturer-level software. The high-voltage system stays sealed throughout — the unlock is a software command via the diagnostic port, not a physical battery intervention.

    Verify the full system

What does Mercedes hybrid or EV battery unlock actually do?
Mercedes-Benz mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles have battery management systems that lock the high-voltage battery as a safety measure when they detect a crash, an impact, or a severe undervoltage event. Once locked, the car cannot start, charge, or drive — the battery is effectively isolated to protect first responders and the vehicle. Our service safely unlocks and resets the BMS via OBD so the car can be returned to service.
Why has my Mercedes hybrid battery locked itself?
The most common causes are: an impact or crash that triggered the safety lockout sensors (even a relatively minor one), a severe undervoltage event from a flat 12V auxiliary battery, a fault during charging that the BMS interpreted as unsafe, or an error during a previous workshop intervention. In all cases, the lockout is a safety feature working as intended — but it requires manufacturer-level software to reset.
Can the car be driven before the battery is unlocked?
No. When the BMS is locked, the high-voltage system is isolated from the drive system, meaning the vehicle cannot move under its own power. The 12V auxiliary system may still work (lights, infotainment briefly) but the car cannot be driven, towed under its own wheels at speed, or charged until the BMS is unlocked and reset.
Is this work safe to do on a customer driveway?
Yes — when carried out by a qualified technician with the correct PPE, insulated tools, and HV-rated equipment. The unlock procedure itself is done via the OBD diagnostic port, not by physically interfering with the high-voltage system. We follow strict health and safety regulations and only work in suitable weather and site conditions.
How long does the unlock procedure take?
