Where a BMW keeps its miles
On E-series cars (E46, E60, E87, E90 era) the figure lives in the instrument cluster and the CAS immobiliser module; F-series moved the CAS's job into the FEM or BDC, and G-series carries on with BDC2. The car cross-checks the pair — and to complicate things nicely, BMW keys log mileage snapshots of their own each time you drive. A one-plug tool that touches only the dash is exactly how the orange-red tamper dot appears, and why so many of our BMW visits start as rescues. The module family tree is laid out in our CAS vs FEM/BDC guide if you like the detail.
When BMW owners call us
Replacement clusters top the list — a used E60 or F30 dash arrives showing the donor's figure and needs setting to yours (our E60 cluster repair page covers the repair-first route). Then km-to-miles conversions on German-market imports, corrections after ECU cloning or DME swaps, and the steady stream of red-dot rescues after somebody's eBay tool wrote half a job. If the household BMW also has dead electric windows or indicators, that's a different module — our FRM repair service — and yes, one visit can cover both.
Models covered
1, 3 and 5 Series across E, F and G generations, X1 through X5, Z4, M cars and BMW-era Minis — petrol, diesel and hybrid. If it wears the roundel, call with the reg and we'll confirm the module layout on the phone.
Whatever the reason — replacement cluster, import conversion, post-repair tidy-up or a rescued DIY attempt — the standard is the same: every module in agreement, verified at your address. Cost questions? The cost guide explains what moves the price.
F30 with the red dot after a DIY tool
An owner bought an OBD gadget, wrote the cluster, and the FEM disagreed — red dot lit. We set the true figure across cluster and FEM together and the dot was gone by the road test. The gadget went in the bin.
